Domestic violence is a confrontation between members of a family or people living in the same house. Some examples of domestic violence are sexual assault, physical harm or fear of physical harm. There are various types of domestic violence for example: physical: slapping, hitting, kicking, biting, etc; emotional: name calling, or insulting; sexual harrasment: forcing someone to have sexual relationships; threats: a very common example of this one is: If you say something I'll kill you!; intimidation: gesture, looks or smashing things; Isolation: being kept from seeing or talking to others, not letting you go out; economic: not allowed to have a job, etc. There are hundreds of symtoms of domestic abuse, there are physical and mental symptoms. Agitation, anxiety, constant state of alertness that makes it difficult to relax or sleep, a sense of hopelessness because the victim could never escape the abuser, fear that they cannot protect themselves, feeling paralyzed, a belief that one is responsible for the abuse, flashbacks, nightmares or memories of the violence; these are some symtoms that are considered emotional. Now some physical symptoms could be asthma, headaches, back pain, chronic pain, etc.
All of this information of domestic abuse makes it easier to understand and helps me connect it to the movie ''The Secret Life of Bees" and the story: "George and the Pink House". In the movie, appears different types of abuse and also to different characters. The character who is constantly abused is Lilly. She is emotional and physical abused. Emotional because her father was constantly telling her that her mother never loved her, and also physically abused her because he would hit her and pull her hair, and at some point she was threatened not to leave the house. Lilly was not the only one abused, Rosaleen was also a victim. She was beat up and hit by the white man and he also insulted her by calling her "dumb nigger". Back then I dont think it was considered abuse, for white people to insult colored people because for them it was normal and okay to do it. But nowadays that situation is defenetly consired abuse and not only for Rosaleen but for every colored person. In the story "George and the Pink House" George was the abuser and used different types or abuse against his victims. For example, he was always intimidating the narrator which was one of his neighbors, with his looks and was always calling him names such as "horse face" and laughing about it. He abused of his daughter Dolly and his wife, until one day his wife died. I think his daughter was afraid of him since he was constantly abusing of her mentally, making unnesesary comments like at the wedding, but all she could do was giggle, and I think she giggled because she was scared of him and to hide the reality that she was going through and all the suffering.
In Puerto Rico there are more than 13, 000 cases of domestic abuse per year, in which women are the princpal victims and there are lots shelters for abused woman who offer them peace and professional help. One famous case of abuse in P.R. is the one of the rapist of Rio Piedras. He was sexually abusing of many college girls in their dorms for months until they found him. Unfortunately all around the world there are always cases of domestic violence and we need to extend our hand and help them, but most important of all, create self counciousness before abusing or thinking of abusing of someone, I believe that eveything has a healthy solution.
